The Beijing Olympic Games multiple 8s opening was certainly very auspicious for China having won the most gold medals so far but for Michael Phelps it was more than that. It is a new record set to be hold for many years until broken.
Michael Phelps has gone where no one in the Olympic history has gone before scoring a record eighth gold medal of the Beijing Games on Sunday, propelling the U.S. team to a hard-fought victory in the 4×100 medley relay.
It was a dream come true for Phelps as his eighth win in as many events at the Water Cube bumped fellow American Mark Spitz’s name off the mark he had held since the 1972 Olympics. Spitz captured seven titles in seven races in Munich, a feat many said couldn’t be topped.
