BEIJING, July 16 (Xinhua) — John Woo’s historical epic “Red Cliff”, reportedly the most expensive film ever made in Asia, has earned 108 million yuan (15.8 million U.S. dollars) in Chinese mainland since its cinema debut last Thursday.

The opening weekend box office takings are a record for a Chinese film, compared to other domestic blockbusters such as Zhang Yimou’s “Curse of the Golden Flower”(96 million yuan) and Ang Lee’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”, the Shanghai-based Oriental Morning Post reported on Tuesday.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Batman’s joust with the Joker has set another box office record.

Stoked by fan fever over the manic performance of the late Heath Ledger as the Joker, “The Dark Knight” set a one-day box office record with $66.4 million on opening day, Warner Bros. head of distribution Dan Fellman said Saturday.

The movie’s Friday haul surpassed the previous record of $59.8 million set last year by “Spider-Man 3.” “The Dark Knight” might break the opening-weekend record of $151.1 million, also held by “Spider-Man 3.”

“I think they’re in jeopardy,” Fellman said of the “Spider-Man 3″ records.

“The Dark Knight” began with a record $18.5 million from midnight screenings, topping the previous high of $16.9 million for “Star Wars: Episode III — The Revenge of the Sith.”

The opening day grosses for “The Dark Knight” far exceeded the full weekend haul of its predecessor, “Batman Begins,” which took in $48.7 million in its first three days in 2005.

Waxen-haired serial sacker and noted golfer Donald Trump did what he reportedly does best this week, closing the deal on the sale of his Florida beachfront mansion for a record sum.

Maison de L’Amitie, a modest 60,000-square-foot property in Palm Beach, sold for a reported $95m on Tuesday, making it the most expensive residential sale ever recorded in the US, according to Trump’s spokesperson.

The magnate himself was overjoyed both for himself and for humanity.

“”I love breaking records,” Trump told reporters, “and this is a record. In an age of so many people getting hurt in real estate, it shows that you can still do well in real estate. I think it’s a great sign for the area, a great sign for Palm Beach and all that Palm Beach represents.”
