Most schools practice “zero tolerance” policies, which often result in children being punished for not abiding to schools’ rules and unacceptable behavior because it violates the well-intentioned policies of the up bringing of the “moral” of the future citizens and leaders of our societies.
Yet there are behaviors that warrant zero tolerance if we do not want unethical conduct to become the norm. One such instance is the use of fake credentials.
This practice of using fake credentials which has been exposed on at least 218 people in Singapore by the Straits Times in Aug 29, is a burgeoning epidemic, mainly fueled by internet marketed diploma mills, of unaccredited “universities” that certify meaningless MBA’s and PHD’s for a price. It is becoming popular because it works for two reasons, it’s acceptable and when exposed, it’s debatable.
Many people trust others to tell the truth and almost none would bother to run a check unless it is utterly important to run a credential check. Have you ever asked someone with a “DR” title whom you have just met whether it’s genuine? No, most of us will greet him with respect and we would address him with that “DR” title. We accept that person’s recognition.
The second reason, even when the fake credentials are exposed, most people will do nothing because there are no laws written against the use of bogus degrees because it’s debatable, unless it is used to swindle others which involved lots of money other wise it is not worth to spend the money to take that person to court.
A person usually earn his academic credential through years of hard work and study where else fake credentials can be purchased from an unaccredited school that asks for little or no academic work to support and normal requires much shorter time than a legitimate one.
The people who use fake credentials are robbing job positions from better qualified candidates or lying to the public for more acceptance and trust in the business world. Those who deserved the job were cheated out of it by fraudulent means are the victims and those who were cheated out to have business connections with bogus credentials are victims too.
Whatever the reason for the use of fake credentials, for personal gains or for business, the verdict is inescapable. They are liars, and they cause great injustice and harm to the societies. None of the rationalizations can be used to justify them for using fake credentials that they make up for the injustice of not getting the real ones, and of course, most of them will say that they don’t know that the qualifications issue by the “universities” are fake or “everybody is doing it”, stands up to logical or ethical reason.
If you claimed a fake degree, you are a loser. Admit it. This is one of the things that should never be tolerated. Will you?
