The WFDSA is a non-governmental, voluntary organization globally representing the direct selling industry (which includes the Network Marketing industry) as a federation of national Direct Selling Associations.

The United States Direct Selling Association serves as the Secretariat for the Federation and is based in Washington DC. There are more than 56 memberships which consist of national direct selling associations and one regional Federation, with one delegate each and a number of regional and global officers, serving as the Board of Directors.

In 2006, the estimated worldwide retail sales is more than US$100 billion with more than 58 million independent business owners or distributors.

WFDSA provides very detailed guidelines in choosing the right opportunity, and what to ask before choosing a company and verifying the claims that one wishes to join.

There are legal counsels worldwide where complaints can be lodged if any malpractices or complaints. These are for safeguarding those who wish to be a part of the business opportunities offered by companies which are members of the WFDSA. There are country chapters or associations which are members of WFDSA subscribing to the Better Business Practices.
